I've been wanting to get a stone massage for a while now, but I'm worried about how hot the stones are. Will they burn my skin or leave red marks?

Also,  I'm a bit of a germaphobe, how are the stones sanitized between clients?

No the stones will not leave red marks or burn your skin. If they are too hot to you, then you should let your therapist know so that they can be cooled down a bit. And yes they are and should be sanitized after each client.

Hot stone massage can be one of the most relaxing experiences ever! My clients love hot stone massages. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you should have an open line of communication with your therapist and feel free to let them know if anything is too hot.  Also, feel free to ask them what sanitation procedures they use to clean their stones.  Some states have specific santizing procedures.

The heat from the stones is not only relaxing and soothing, but it can also allow the therapist to massage a bit deeper into your muscles without any added pain.  Go for it!

Hot stone massage is great for relaxing sore, tired muscles.  The stones should be warm enough to feel nice, but not uncomfortably so or too hot that they leave marks.  Everyone has a slighly different temperature threshhold so your therapist should be checking in with you to make sure.  Also, don't be afraid to speak up and let your therapist know if the stones are too warm or not warm enough.  I clean my stones (scrubbing each stone & the roasting pan) in warm water with a peppermint soap right after each treatment.
