A hernia is a hole or rip in either the abdominal wall or inguinal ring. It may result in some bulging as well as mild to severe pain.

Massage should not be administered to the site of an untreated hernia. If the client also has a fever or signs of an infection, massage is systemically contraindicated. If a client has had recent surgery for a hernia precaution needs to be taken and the client must cleared by the primary care physician or surgeon.
