Herpes Simplex

Herpes simplex is a viral infection that can result in sores or blisters around the mouth, genitals thighs and buttocks. Outbreaks are often preceded by two to three days of tingling, itching or pain. The blisters usually disappear in about two weeks.

Any herpes outbreak is a contraindication for massage. Massage may be given to a person with a history of herpes but not experiencing a current outbreak. Sheets, towels and other items used must be cleaned using universal precautions.
