Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ)

Description:

"Temporomandibular Joint Disorder" (often referred to as either TMD or TMJ) is an umbrella term for various problems involving the jaw. The symptoms of TMJ can include not only jaw and mouth pain, but pain in the ear, neck and shoulder areas as well. There can also be a clicking or locking of the jaw and poor range of motion. Treatment often includes physical therapy and in severe or chronic cases surgery may be indicated.

Precautions:

Massage can be very helpful in alleviating temporomandibular joint disorders when addressed early on. If the problem has been long-term and has already resulted in deformity or bone growth massage may be of limited benefit.
