Description:
Diabetes is a group of metabolic disorders resulting in hyperglycemia. There are two main varieties of diabetes, type I and type II. Symptoms may include frequent urination, chronic thirst, nausea, vomiting, weight loss and increased appetite. Complications from untreated diabetes are impaired vision, peripheral neuropathy and kidney dysfunction.
Precautions:
As long as tissues are healthy, massage will help improve circulation and reduce stress and anxiety. For those who may have advanced symptoms massage may be contraindicated and you may want to consult with the client's physician for approval. If you have clients with diabetes, become familiar with what to do in a diabetic emergency. Left untreated situations such as insulin shock or diabetic coma can be fatal. Ketoacidosis is a shortage if insulin and lack of glucose in the cells. Severe hypoglycemia is a result of too much insulin in the body.
