Peripheral Neuropathy
Description:
Peripheral neuropathy is caused by poor capillary circulation and too much glucose in the blood, and is considered a side effect of diabetes. It can also be caused by alcoholism or (rarely) because of certain vitamin deficiencies or exposure to toxic substances. Certain immune system disorders can also result in peripheral neuropathy. The result is nerve damage leading to tingling, pain or even numbness usually in the hands and/or feet.
Precautions:
Appropriateness of massage needs to be determined on a case by case basis and depends greatly on the cause and extent of the neuropathy. Because of altered sensation the client may not be able to give accurate feedback on pressure or pain.
