Polio
Description:
Polio is caused by a virus which attacks the intestines first and then, for about one percent of those infected, the anterior horn of the spinal cord. If the anterior horn is affected there will be destruction of motor neurons leading to degeneration, atrophy and paralysis of skeletal muscles.
Precautions:
Once the infection is past the acute phase, massage is appropriate for polio survivors and can help with improving circulation and muscle tone.
