Trauma, Emotional
Description:
Emotional or psychological trauma is the mind's reaction to a very stressful or potentially life threatening event. Left untreated it can lead to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Symptoms of emotional trauma differ from person to person but may include intense feeling of sadness or anger, panic attacks, insomnia, emotional detachment or even substance abuse.
Precautions:
Emotional trauma may best be treated with a combination of psychological counseling and certain prescription medications, such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs, such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, etc.). Massage may be useful when done in collaboration with other healthcare providers, taking in the client's level of tolerance for touch.
