Spinal Cord Injury
Description:
Spinal cord injury is any condition in which some or all of the fibers in the spinal cord have been damaged. It may be caused by injury or trauma or, rarely, by tumors or bony growths in the spinal canal. Symptoms will vary with the severity and location of the injury but may include loss of sensation or motor function. Severe injury, such as the severing of the spinal cord can result in paralysis or even loss of life.
Precautions:
Massage is appropriate for clients who still have some sensation present and there is no underlying pathology that might contraindicate it. Massage may be included in some cases as a part of a healthcare team experienced in spinal cord injury.
