Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)
Description:
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is caused by an irritation of the median nerve when it is entrapped by the carpal bones of the wrist and the ligament that holds down the flexor tendons. It can be the result of fluid buildup in the area or injury from repetive movement such as keyboard typing or on assembly lines. Symptoms can include numbness, tingling and/or pain in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and half of the ring finger. Treatment can range from dietary changes or physical therapy to surgery.
Precautions:
The appropriateness of massage depends on the cause and type of problem and the type of treatment the client is receiving. The massage therapist should be part of an overall healthcare team. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) caused by fluid buid-up responds well to light stroke massage, while CTS caused by a build up of fibrous tissue may or may not respond to massage.
