Piriformis Syndrome is often confused with sciatica. It is a result of the sciatic nerve being entrapped by the piriformis muscle in the buttocks area.
If the pain is diagnosed as "false" sciatica, or piriformis syndrome, massage can be very beneficial. It can help to relax the muscles, release trigger points and abnormal adhesions, and improve posture to relieve pressure on nerve roots. If the pain has been diagnosed as true sciatic pain, massage is contraindicated and may actually make the condition worse.
