Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a type of anxiety disorder caused by a traumatic event such as rape, kidnapping, war or natural disaster such as a hurricane or flood. Symptoms include hypervigilance, panic attacks, flashbacks and nightmares.
Gentle, non-intrusive massage may be helpful in alleviating stress. In extreme cases it is important to work together as a team with the client's mental health provider. Precautions need to be taken with regard to boundaries, especially in cases of abuse.
